Over and Over

“Over and Over” is a conceptual visual research project constructed through photographs collected from Turkish family archives spanning 1920 to 1970. The project approaches family photography not as a nostalgic object of memory, but as a document that shows how gender roles have been reproduced across generations. The work does not center heroism, resistance, or narratives of power; instead, it examines how the roles women were compelled to assume in everyday life became normalized. Recurring themes such as marriage, motherhood, labor, and care are made visible through similar body postures, spaces, and relationships across images from different periods. The photographs are read not merely as images carrying individual memories, but as records bearing traces of social order. When ordinary scenes from family albums are brought together, a structure emerges that demonstrates continuity in women’s position within the family. Rather than romanticizing the past, the project questions social memory through repeating visual patterns and reimagines family archives as sites where silently transmitted roles reside.
“Over and Over”, 1920 ile 1970 yılları arasındaki Türkiye aile arşivlerinden toplanan fotoğraflar üzerinden kurgulanan kavramsal bir görsel araştırmadır. Proje, aile fotoğrafını nostaljik bir hatıra nesnesi olarak değil, toplumsal cinsiyet rollerinin kuşaklar boyunca nasıl tekrar üretildiğini gösteren bir belge olarak ele alır. Çalışmanın odağında kahramanlık, direniş ya da güç anlatıları yer almaz; bunun yerine kadınların gündelik yaşam içinde üstlenmek zorunda bırakıldığı rollerin nasıl normalleştirildiği incelenir. Evlilik, annelik, emek ve bakım gibi tekrar eden temalar, farklı dönemlere ait görüntülerde benzer beden duruşları, mekânlar ve ilişkiler üzerinden görünür hâle gelir. Fotoğraflar yalnızca bireysel anıları taşıyan imgeler değil, toplumsal düzenin izlerini barındıran kayıtlar olarak okunur. Albümlerde sıradan sahneler bir araya geldiğinde, kadınların aile içindeki konumuna dair süreklilik gösteren bir yapı ortaya çıkar. Proje, geçmişi romantize etmek yerine tekrar eden görsel kalıplar üzerinden toplumsal hafızayı sorgular ve aile arşivlerini sessizce aktarılan rollerin alanı olarak yeniden düşünür.
