Günümüzde kadınlara yönelik şiddet yalnızca bireysel bir güvenlik sorunu değil, aynı zamanda kent içinde parçalanmış ve erişimi zor destek sistemlerinin de sonucudur. Johannesburg’un yoğun ve parçalı dokusuna sahip Yeoville bölgesinde konumlanan Public Safety; polis birimi, adli yardım, danışmanlık, psikolojik destek ve bunlara eklenen yaşam podlarını tek bir yapı içinde bir araya getirir. Proje, Rem Koolhaas’ın “Bigness” kavramını fiziksel büyüklükten ziyade bu birimlerin yarattığı programatik yoğunluk ve kentsel etki üzerinden yorumlar. Yapı, kentle ilişki kuran görünür bir güvenlik arayüzü üretirken, içeride kadınlar için kontrollü ve korunaklı bir iyileşme alanı oluşturur. Bu mekânsal birliktelik, parçalanmış destek sistemlerini bütünleşik bir kentsel altyapıya dönüştürerek toplumsal dayanıklılığı destekler. Jane Jacobs’ın “Sokağın Gözleri” ilkesiyle uyumlu olarak proje; güvenliği izolasyonla değil, aktif mevcudiyet, görünürlük ve kentsel bütünleşme üzerinden yeniden kurgular.
Today, violence against women is not only an individual security issue, but also the result of fragmented and difficult to access support systems within the city. Located in Yeoville, a district of Johannesburg with a dense and fragmented urban fabric, Public Safety brings together the police unit, legal aid, counseling, psychological support, and the living pods added to these programs within a single structure. The project interprets Rem Koolhaas’s concept of “Bigness” through the programmatic density and urban impact created by these units, rather than physical size. While the building produces a visible security interface that relates to the city, it creates a controlled and protected healing space for women inside. This spatial togetherness transforms fragmented support systems into an integrated urban infrastructure and supports social resilience. In line with Jane Jacobs’s principle of “Eyes on the Street,” the project redefines security not through isolation, but through active presence, visibility, and urban integration.
